My approach to the current virus situation…
With the world going crazy over this Coronavirus situation, its a good time to remind ourselves of basic immune protecting protocol. This is a topic I tend to ‘harp on’ about quite a bit in the lead up to Winter as this is really the time to be doing the prep work. Now with the rapid spread of this new virus and the unknown effect it will have on us and our society, it’s as good a time as any to thoroughly understand what we can do to help ourselves and our loved ones.
As a Mum of 2 primary school aged children and a husband in the corporate world, protecting them is of main concern. In our household everyone is used to me stirring up some concoction or other, or coming at them with an acupuncture needle so they don’t really bat an eye when I put something in front of them and tell them to swallow!
First and foremost for the kids, straight after breakfast they have a Zinc & Vitamin C drink which I also mix a powdered probiotic into. It tastes like raspberry cordial so they are happy to oblige and I know that their day is off to a good start. My Zinc/C of choice is the Metagenics MetaZinc & Vitamin C, and this is one that my husband and I take as well. If any of us get sick, we double the dose of this…sometimes more for us adults.
Vitamin C is known to coat viruses so is a good product to have on hand. A powdered Vitamin C will be absorbed by the body easier, and a liposomal tends to be easier on the gut. Bioceuticals do a good Liposomal C.
One of my herbal suppliers – Panaxea – have created some wonderful products, and in my medicine cabinet I always have on hand their Antibiobotanicals and AV/AT (AntiVirii). The Antibiobotanicals is a herbal antibiotic – a good one to take if mucus becomes coloured or you suspect that your illness may be bacterial. The AV/AT or now named AntiVirii is an antiviral that Doctor Daniel Weber developed during the SARs epidemic. It has pulmonary protective, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties that are useful for treating many strains of Influenza, of which the Coronavirus is one. This product can also be taken as a preventative, which if this Coronavirus continues to rapidly spread, I may consider taking.
ChinaMed have some wonderful Chinese Herbal capsulated formulas and the two I always have on hand during cold and flu season is the CNF and Antitox formulas. Taken together these are great at treating colds and flus where a sore throat is a characteristic. I find that at a high dose, I’m often feeling considerably less symptomatic a day or two later.
For the kids, Cathay Herbal do some wonderful paediatric formulas. These are granulated and sweetened with Stevia to help with the taste. Their Cold & Flu is very useful – just mixed with hot water and dissolved. They also have a Fever and Cough formula which I keep on hand as well for fevers that are low grade or not budging with panadol/nurofen, and coughs that tend to be dominant or hard to shift.
All the products I’ve mentioned above are ‘Practitioner-only’ products and should only be dispensed by a registered and fully qualified health professional. Dosages should be guided by the health practitioner and followed accordingly.
So these are the supplements I tend to use for my family, but what else?
Chicken Bone Broth! An absolute staple in our house – warm, nourishing and great for when a cold or flu strikes. The kids enjoy it with noodles, my husband and I a quick cup to start the day. It’s often part of our breakfast staples in the week – the kids think having chicken noodle soup for breakfast is great.
To make it is very simple. Organic chicken bones – a packet of wings and drumsticks will do. Pop into a pot and cover with filtered water and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Let it sit for 30 mins. Add anything you like really – carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bay leaves, pepper, salt….and bring to the boil. Skim the surface and reduce to a gentle simmer. I cover my pot and let it simmer for at least 3-4 hours. You can actually do this for much longer….depending on the strength of soup you’re after.
A clean healthy diet, plenty of clear fluids and good quality sleep go a long way in staying healthy too. Our immune system thrives on all these practices. Being run down or burning the candle at both ends are only going to leave you more susceptible to picking up any bugs lurking around, so put yourself first.
As the weather begins to cool, it is our nature to go within….to start the preparation for winter hibernation….this year it may be government enforced?! So do a bit of nesting, stock your shelves, spend time cooking in the kitchen and enjoy time with your family.
