Meditation – a powerful tool…
The benefits of meditation are far and wide. Essentially this ancient and basic practice switches off the hormones of stress that circulate in our blood causing chaos and disharmony to various systems in our body.
By turning off our stress response we are able to experience blissful feelings of relaxation, our blood circulation can increase as the tightness in our muscles and vessels melts away, more oxygen can flow to various areas of the body and more energy can be freed up to put to better use!
Due to these physiological changes the following are just some of the rewards that can be experienced:
- Reduction in pain – headaches, muscle aches, joint pain
- Reduced blood pressure
- Improved digestion
- Clearer and calmer thinking
- Increased concentration and focus
- Improved memory
- Increase in energy levels
- A more positive outlook leading to feelings of joy and happiness
- Stronger immune system
- Reduced feelings of worry and anxiety
- More balanced emotions
- Increased self-awareness
Meditation doesn’t need to be difficult or just something that ‘hippies’ do. There are many different types which means you are able to find something that suits you. It doesn’t have to be practised for long periods of time – of course the longer you practise the more benefits will be felt – but even shorter periods of practise will reward you with plenty of benefits.
Winter is a perfect time for meditation as it is a time for going inwards, being quiet, reflecting and being still.
Once you have found a specific style or technique that works for you it is a practise that can be implemented quite easily and utilised on many different levels. It provides you with a powerful tool for your armoury to assist you in many ways and at many different times throughout your life.
You won’t be sorry you started, but perhaps you will curious to explore it further, and surprised by all that you discover about yourself. Or perhaps it will merely become part of your daily routine like brushing your teeth!
Whatever your situation and use for meditation may be, do yourself a favour and give it a go. There are apps for iPhone’s and Smart Phones, books, CD’s and even Youtube videos. There are local classes and private teachings.
